Surrounded by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on three sides and the Pacific Ocean to the West, living in Muir Beach might feel more like a luxury vacation than a permanent residence. Only a twenty-minute drive from Mill Valley, Muir Beach is an enclave that appeals to those looking for a quiet lifestyle with urban conveniences nearby.
Although the pub at the Pelican Inn offers the only nightlife in the area, there is still plenty to do in Muir Beach. Anchoring the community is a small, secluded beach perfect for family picnics, and just up the road is the Muir Beach Overlook, which provides dramatic views of the California coastline. Only two miles from Muir Beach is the world famous Muir Woods National Monument, described by conservationist John Muir as "the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world." Slide Ranch and the Green Gulch Farm Zen Center are two well-known organic farms in the area. Both offer classes in organic farming, with each putting its spin on the activities. Slide Ranch is family and child centered, while Green Gulch also offers instruction in Buddhist philosophy, workshops, and meditation retreats.
Not far from the amenities of east Marin and San Francisco, Muir Beach offers the best of all worlds. With a well-educated, affluent population, Muir Beach is a community of fewer that 200 upscale homes in a highly desirable location. Many homes offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains in the east, or ocean views taking in San Francisco to the Farallon Islands in the west, making each property in Muir Beach one of a kind.
